Our Lady of Guadalupe

Where Faith meets Science

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Where faith meets science.

I have researched the science that is associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe’s image. Some of the scientific discoveries that have been recognized about her image are her eyes, her mantle and a musical score to name a few.

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s image holds numerous messages and meanings. Almost five hundred years have passed since her apparition to Juan Diego in 1531. During these past centuries there have been many advances in science.

One of the things that focuses on the science of her image is the Virgin Mary’s eyes. Through Technology her eyes have been magnified and show reflections of people in the same manner that human eyes reflect images. It is believed that the images of the people in her eyes are the people who were present when her image was miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego’s tilma in 1531.

Another scientific discovery is her mantle has stars on it, after several centuries since her image first appeared on the tilma, it has been found that the astronomical accuracy of the placement of the constellations on the mantle is in direct correlation to the night sky over Mexico City on the night of her apparition 12/12/1531.

The Image itself has a musical score imbedded in it. A mathematical accountant Fernando Ojeda made this incredible discovery. He postulated that “it (the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe) has perfect symmetry, therefore it has music.” The mathematician Pythagoras pointed out that where there is perfect symmetry there is music.

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s image also shows she is a virgin who is with child. Her image shows she is of mixed race, mestizo. She brings with her many messages that are valuable to us today. I would like to speak on the science as well as the faith that encompasses Our Lady of Guadalupe’s image.

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Where faith meets science
By Maureen Chapman

The Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, near what is now Mexico City, Mexico. She came with a simple request to have a church built there in her name. Juan Diego went to the bishop to ask him to have a church built on Tepeyac Hill as the Virgin Mary had asked him to do.

The bishop required evidence that it was the Virgin Mary’s request. The confirmation the Virgin Mary provided to Juan Diego was to present Castilian roses to the bishop as verification. Castilian roses do not bloom in the winter or in Mexico  As Juan Deigo was unfolding his tilma to the Bishop of Mexico, Juan de Zumarraga, to show him the Castilian roses, the real miracle appeared which was the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego’s Tilma in 1531.

That same image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is currently on display in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Mexico. The image has remained intact since 1531.
